Explore the world of orchestral masterpieces with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic! In this Symphonic Jewelbox program, the orchestra performs a potpourri of famous beloved symphonic tunes: from the eternal Blue Danube Waltz to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, Beethoven to Berlioz, and more. This performance at the historic American Theatre is a collection of timeless orchestral gems that will delight audiences of all ages, new and seasoned concert-goers alike.

This concert hosts a special performance of Strauss' Serenade for Winds led by guest conductor Dr. Mark Johnson. Our annual Golden Baton raffle will be held to choose a winner to guest conduct the orchestra in December.

To foster musical talent in our community and give young musicians the valuable opportunity to perform as a soloist with an orchestra, the Hampton Roads Philharmonic is delighted to continue its annual Young Artist Competition. Decided by an adjudicated competition, the winner will perform with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic as a guest soloist.  Soloists are asked to prepare a movement of a concerto or suitable concert piece to perform.  Full rules and details are available online.

The competition event is not open to a public audience, but we invite you to attend the Young Artist Competition performance on March 7, 2027 to hear the winner live.

Celebrate the magic of the season with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic's annual Winter Classics and Holiday Favorites concert on December 13th, 2026, at 2:30 pm at the historic American Theatre. This program blends the enchanting charm of winter-inspired classical music with the heartwarming sounds of beloved film scores and holiday medleys. From "Miracle on 34th St." to "Frozen," this is a light, bite-sized performance to delight the whole family.

Two highlights of the afternoon will be the winner of our annual Golden Baton raffle taking the podium to conduct Leroy Anderson's lively Sleigh Ride and a surprise guest narrator to recite T'was the Night Before Christmas with live orchestra.

On March 7, 2026, at 2:30 pm, the Hampton Roads Philharmonic will take the stage to showcase the Grand Prize winner of our 11th Annual Young Artist Competition. The winner will perform as a featured soloist with a movement of a concert or concert showpiece of their choice. Each season, this performance dazzles and inspires with the best of the young musical talent that our community has to offer.

For the first time, this performance will also highlight a student composer: Victoria King's Nonna's Song from her ballet in progress, The Little Match Girl.

Lalo's lyrical and fiery Symphony in G Minor as well as Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture complete the program.

On Sunday, April 25, 2027, at 3:00 pm, the HRP will partner with Christopher Newport University choirs in a one-time-only performance of a choral masterwork. This will be a grand, large-scale performance combining the full sounds of orchestra, choirs, and vocal soloists in the acoustically superb Diamonstein Concert Hall.

The Hampton Roads Philharmonic is excited to return to Christopher Newport University's 6th annual Virginia Community Music Festival on May 22nd at 7:00 pm. This festival celebrates community music, bringing together ensembles from across Virginia. The HRP will perform a 50-minute program of highlights from our season in the beautiful Diamondstein Concert Hall.

In addition to our performance, the festival will feature workshops and lectures on topics such as health for adult musicians, audience development, fundraising, and more. We encourage you to attend all weekend to support your local performing arts organizations.
