Festival runs Saturday-Sunday April 27-28, 2024 at Christopher Newport University

The Virginia Community Music Festival presents public performances by community music ensembles throughout Virginia, in addition to lectures and workshops on health for adult musicians, audience development, fundraising, and more. The concerts are free, open to the public, and held in Christopher Newport University’s Ferguson Center for the Arts and Pope Chapel.

The HRP performs on Sunday, April 28th at 5:00 pm and will perform two recent selections from its 11th season: Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Grieg’s Symphonic Dances. We encourage you to attend all weekend and support the local performing arts in your community.

To close our season, The Hampton Roads Philharmonic is proud to partner with Moxart. Moxart (“Mox-art”) is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 dedicated to providing skilled amateur soloists the opportunity to shine in concertos alongside orchestral ensembles.

This exciting addition to our season features a stalwart of the cello repertoire, Saint Saen’s Concerto No. 1 in A minor and two pillars of the orchestral piano repertoire, the Symphonic Variations of Cesar Franck and J.S. Bach’s Concert in A Major.

8th Annual Young Artist Competition Performance

Join us for a special evening celebrating the remarkable talents of our 8th Annual Young Artist Competition winner. This concert showcases dedication and accomplishment, providing a platform for these outstanding young musicians to share their passion for performing. Competition winner Angela Zhang will perform the Molto allegro con fuoco from Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto in G Minor. The orchestra will add Beethoven’s dramatic Egmont Overture and Grieg’s Symphonic Dances to complete the program.

Join us for our Golden Baton winner’s conducting debut of Sleigh Ride and Hampton mayor Donnie Tuck as special guest narrator for ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. From cherished Christmas classics to enchanting winter-inspired masterpieces, this concert is a light, bite-sized concert to delight the whole family.

In ‘Symphonic Jewel Box,’ we unveil the finest gems of classical music, featuring iconic works from the masters, including Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Stravinsky, and Mozart. Experience the triumphant power of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, a haunting journey through Beethoven’s Eroica funeral march, the enchanting melodies of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, and the captivating storytelling of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.

8th Annual Young Artist Competition

To foster musical talent in our community and give young musicians the valuable opportunity to perform solo with an orchestra, the Hampton Roads Philharmonic is opening a portion of its season to feature a young soloist. Decided by an adjudicated competition, the winner will perform with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic as a featured soloist. The competition event is closed to the public audience, but we invite you to attend the Young Artist Competition Showcase performance in March to hear the winners live. Register at hrphil.org/yac.

More About the Hampton Roads Philharmonic

The Hampton Roads Philharmonic (HRP) showcases the community’s rich musical talent in four exciting programs throughout the season: October, December, March, and May. A diverse orchestra, the HRP includes active and retired military, music teachers, students, senior citizens, and youth. The orchestra welcomes familiar, and new composers alike and actively commission new works each season.

In addition to our busy concert season, members of our philharmonic also perform throughout Hampton Roads. Past performances have included Sister Cities of Newport News, Summerwinds Winery in Smithfield, and Ivy Memorial Baptist Church in Hampton.
