Join the Hampton Roads Philharmonic as we open our 13th performing season on October 19, 2025, at 2:30 pm with a program of orchestral song and dance at the historic American Theatre in Phoebus, Virginia.

This program highlights three collections: Grieg’s spirited Norwegian Dances, brimming with folk-inspired tunes; Bizet’s powerful and dazzling L’arlesienne Suite 2; and a lesser-heard gem in Faure’s Shylock Suite, brought to life by soprano Kathryn Kelly. Elgar’s dreamy Chanson De Nuit and a fiery furiant from Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances round out the program.

Audience members at this performance will have the opportunity to raffle for our Golden Baton to guest conduct Sleigh Ride in December!

Soloist performs at the Young Artists Competition

In order to foster musical talent in our community and to give young musicians the valuable opportunity to perform as a soloist with an orchestra, the Hampton Roads Philharmonic is delighted to continue its annual Young Artist Competition. Decided by an adjudicated competition, the winner will perform with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic as a guest soloist. Soloists are asked to prepare a movement of a concerto or a suitable concert piece to perform.

The competition is not open to the public, but we invite you to attend the Young Artist Competition performance on March 8, 2026, to hear the winner live.

Interested soloists are invited to register online at hrphil.org/yac.
Deadline to register is October 28th, 2025.
Registration fee is $30.

Celebrate the magic of the season with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic’s annual Winter Classics and Holiday Favorites concert on December 14, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at the American Theatre. This program blends the enchanting charm of winter-inspired classical music with the heartwarming sounds of beloved holiday and Christmas tunes.

Two highlights of the afternoon will be the winner of our annual Golden Baton raffle taking the podium to conduct Leroy Anderson’s lively Sleigh Ride and a surprise guest narrator to recite ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas with live orchestra.

This concert is a light, bite-sized performance to delight the whole family.

The Hampton Roads Philharmonic marks America’s 250th anniversary with a program of music by American composers, performed in the world-class Diamondstein Hall at Christopher Newport University.

This performance brings to life selections from Edward MacDowell’s Indian Suite, steeped in 19th-century romanticism, and Steven Bryant’s Dusk, a modern meditation capturing the quiet glow of the day’s end.

At the heart of the concert is Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1, a landmark piece that blends the grandeur of the symphonic tradition with spiritual melodies and dance-inspired rhythms. This performance aims to contribute to the ongoing discovery and recognition of her musical legacy.

The Hampton Roads Philharmonic is excited to return to Christopher Newport University’s 5th annual Virginia Community Music Festival on May 9th at 3 pm. This festival is a celebration of community music, bringing together ensembles from across Virginia. This year, young musicians from the Peninsula Youth Orchestra will join the HRP side by side for a program of American-inspired music.

In addition to our performance, the festival will feature workshops and lectures on topics such as health for adult musicians, audience development, fundraising, and more. We encourage you to attend the entire weekend to support your local performing arts organizations.

A diverse orchestra, the HRP includes active and retired military, music teachers, students, senior citizens, and youth.
